10 Valuable Lessons from Mark Goode to Transform Your Career and Life

I’ve been fortunate to learn a lot in my career—through triumphs, failures, and everything in between. These lessons aren’t just theoretical; they’re the backbone of how I approach business and life. I’m sharing them with you because I believe they can help you grow, just as they’ve helped me and so many others.

  1. 1. The Power of Mindset

Your mindset will make or break you—simple as that. I’ve had days where everything went wrong, deals fell through, and the weight of the world felt unbearable. But here’s what I’ve learned: your mindset is a choice. You can let the tough days crush you, or you can see them as opportunities to learn and grow.

When I started my first business, I was terrified of failing. But I chose to focus on the possibilities instead of the risks. That mindset didn’t just help me build a successful company; it gave me the resilience to keep pushing, even when things got tough.

Mark’s Tip: Spend five minutes every morning visualising your goals and reminding yourself why you’re doing what you do. It’ll set the tone for your day.

    2. The Importance of Clarity

When I launched Inspired Recruitment, I was crystal clear on what I wanted: to create a business that puts people first. That clarity became my North Star, guiding every decision. Without it, I’d have been all over the place, chasing things that didn’t align with my values.

Whatever your goal—whether it’s landing your dream job or growing your business—get specific. Write it down. Be honest with yourself about what you want and why. Clarity creates focus, and focus leads to results.

Mark’s Tip: Ask yourself, “What does success look like for me?” If you can’t answer that in one sentence, it’s time to get clear.

    3. The Need for Resilience

Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back; it’s about bouncing forward. I remember losing a big client early in my career. It felt like the end of the world at the time, but looking back, it was a turning point. It forced me to refine my approach, improve my service, and come back stronger.

Failures aren’t failures unless you let them be. They’re lessons, and they’re often the most valuable ones.

Mark’s Tip: When something goes wrong, write down three things you’ve learned from it. It’s a simple exercise that can completely shift your perspective.

    4. The Value of Proactivity

In recruitment, waiting for opportunities to come to you is a recipe for mediocrity. I’ve always believed in making things happen. When I wanted to break into the optical sector, I didn’t sit around hoping clients would find me—I picked up the phone, had the difficult conversations, and demonstrated my value.

Whether you’re job hunting or running a business, don’t wait for doors to open. Go and knock on them yourself.

Mark’s Tip: Each day, identify one action you can take to move closer to your goal. Then do it—no excuses.

    5. The Power of Self-Awareness

For years, I tried to be good at everything. It was exhausting—and impossible. The game changed when I became brutally honest with myself about my strengths and weaknesses. Instead of trying to do it all, I focused on what I was great at and built a team to fill the gaps.

Self-awareness isn’t about criticising yourself; it’s about understanding yourself. The more you know, the better decisions you’ll make.

Mark’s Tip: Take 10 minutes to list your strengths, weaknesses, values, and motivations. It’ll give you a clearer picture of who you are and where you’re headed.

    6. The Importance of Continuous Learning

Even after 25+ years in business, I’m still learning. I’ve invested in sales training, leadership courses, and mindset development because I know there’s always room to grow. When you stop learning, you stop progressing.

Mark’s Tip: Commit to reading one book, listening to one podcast, or attending one training session each month. Small steps add up to big changes.

    7. The Need for Adaptability

Life doesn’t follow a script. The pandemic was a stark reminder of that. Businesses had to pivot overnight, and those who embraced change survived. Those who didn’t? Well, you know the rest.

The same applies to your career. Be open to change. Embrace uncertainty. Adaptability isn’t a weakness; it’s a superpower.

Mark’s Tip: When faced with change, ask yourself, “What’s the opportunity here?” There’s always one if you’re willing to look.

    8. The Value of Positive Relationships

My success isn’t just mine—it’s shared with the incredible people I’ve worked with along the way. Surrounding yourself with the right people is non-negotiable. Whether it’s mentors, colleagues, or friends, the company you keep will shape your journey.

Mark’s Tip: Identify three people who inspire you, and find ways to connect with them more often. Positive energy is contagious.

    9. The Importance of Accountability

Accountability is what turns dreams into reality. When I set a goal, I make it public—whether it’s to my team, my family, or even on social media. That accountability keeps me focused and motivated.

The same applies to you. If you’re serious about achieving something, find someone who’ll hold you to it.

Mark’s Tip: Share your goals with a trusted friend or mentor, and check in with them regularly. You’ll be amazed at how much it drives you forward.

One of my biggest challenges has been managing distractions (thank you, ADHD). But I’ve learned that being present and focused is a game-changer. When I’m with my grandson Joshua, I make a conscious effort to put my phone away and fully enjoy the moment. It’s the same with work—when you focus on one thing at a time, you achieve so much more.

Mark’s Tip: Start each day by listing your top three priorities. Focus on those, and let the rest wait.

    Final Thoughts from Mark

Success isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being intentional. It’s about taking small, consistent steps in the right direction and staying true to who you are. These lessons have shaped my journey, and I hope they’ll shape yours too.

Remember: You’re capable of more than you think. Believe in yourself, take action, and never stop learning.

    Here’s to your success!
