30 Years of Lessons: The Principles That Built My Success

Over the last three decades, I’ve had my fair share of challenges, successes, failures, and lessons. Each step along the way has shaped the person I am today. I’ve built several successful businesses, faced sleepless nights, made tough decisions, and—most importantly—helped make a positive difference in people’s lives. I want to share some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned so far. If you’re looking to improve your career, mindset, or overall life, I hope these principles inspire you to take that next step.

1. Embrace a Growth Mindset

For years, I thought I had to be the smartest person in the room to succeed. That belief kept me stuck, afraid to ask for help or try new things. It wasn’t until I embraced the idea that abilities and intelligence can be developed through hard work and persistence that my life began to change.

I realised that mistakes are just stepping stones. Early in my career, I launched a business idea that flopped spectacularly. It was painful, but it taught me more than any success ever could. The key is to focus on growth, not perfection. Whatever your goal is—changing jobs, building a business, or improving your mindset—believe you can learn what you need to succeed.

2. Commitment to Goals and Values

Commitment is the difference between dreams and reality. It’s easy to set goals but sticking to them when the excitement fades is where most people falter.

I remember when I started Inspired Recruitment. It wasn’t easy. The long hours, the self-doubt, the financial risks—it was overwhelming at times. But I made a promise to myself to build a business with integrity, to help people find not just jobs, but careers that aligned with their values. That commitment carried me through the hard times.

Ask yourself: what are you willing to fight for? What values guide your decisions? Write them down, and remind yourself of them every single day.

3. Resilience and Perseverance

Life will knock you down—it’s a guarantee. Success isn’t about avoiding failure; it’s about getting back up every time you fall.

I’ve had moments where I’ve questioned everything. There were years when it felt like I was taking one step forward and two steps back. But resilience kept me going. Whether it was a failed deal, a personal loss, or self-doubt creeping in, I made the decision to keep moving forward.

Resilience isn’t about being strong all the time. It’s about showing up even when you feel weak. The secret? Take one small step, then another, and another. Over time, those small steps add up to something remarkable.

4. Self-Awareness: Know Yourself

You can’t succeed if you don’t understand yourself. Your strengths, weaknesses, and motivations are your compass. When I was younger, I chased goals that weren’t aligned with who I really was. I was chasing success for the sake of success.

It wasn’t until I took the time to reflect on what truly mattered to me—helping people, building businesses with integrity, making a difference—that everything started to click. Self-awareness helps you make better decisions, whether it’s choosing the right job, building meaningful relationships, or knowing when to walk away from something that doesn’t serve you.

Take the time to ask yourself: What drives me? What holds me back? Be honest.

5. Build a Strong Support Network

Success is never a solo journey. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, challenge you, and believe in your potential.

I’ve been fortunate to have incredible people in my life—friends, colleagues, and mentors who encouraged me when I was at my lowest. My wife, Vicki, has been my rock through it all, reminding me of what I’m capable of when I’ve doubted myself.

Find your tribe. Whether it’s a partner, friends, or colleagues, invest in relationships that nourish your soul and align with your values.

6. Learn From Your Mistakes

I used to see failure as a reflection of my worth. Now, I see it as feedback. Every mistake I’ve made has taught me something invaluable.

When I launched The Bugs Group, it was a huge leap of faith. I didn’t have all the answers, and I made plenty of mistakes along the way. But I embraced those failures, learned from them, and adjusted course. Today, we’re helping thousands of children build confidence and resilience.

Failure is never the end—it’s a lesson. Take it, learn from it, and move forward stronger than before.

7. Stay Focused and True to Your Values

Distractions are everywhere. The noise, the pressure to fit in, the fear of missing out—it’s all too easy to lose sight of what matters.

But I’ve learned that the only way to stay grounded is to stay true to your values, even when it’s hard. There were times in my career when it would’ve been easy to cut corners, to take the quick win instead of doing things the right way. But I knew that if I compromised my values, I’d lose sight of why I started in the first place.

Focus on what’s important, not what’s urgent. Align your actions with your values, and the rest will fall into place.

8. Love What You Do

Steve Jobs once said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” I couldn’t agree more.

I wake up every day excited to make a difference—whether it’s helping someone land their dream job, mentoring my team, or seeing a child’s confidence grow through The Bugs Group. That passion fuels me, even on the tough days.

If you’re not in love with what you do, it’s time to reflect. What excites you? What makes you lose track of time? Find a way to build your life around that, because true success comes from doing work that matters to you.

Final Thoughts

Success isn’t a destination; it’s a journey. It’s about embracing growth, staying resilient, building meaningful connections, and staying true to your values. I’m living proof that with hard work, self-awareness, and a little courage, you can create a life you’re proud of.

So, what’s holding you back? Take that first step, no matter how small. Your dreams are worth it, and so are you.
