When it comes to preparing for a job interview, most people get anxious about the unknown: What will they ask? How can I present myself in the best light? It’s understandable – we all want to make a great impression. But the truth is, preparation is everything, and that’s where Inspired Recruitment can help.

Here, I’m going to share 6 expert tips for interview success, built on years of experience in recruitment and helping candidates shine. These tips are practical and straightforward, giving you the tools to not only prepare, but to excel in any interview situation.

1. Know Your Skills and How to Showcase Them

One of the first steps to success in an interview is knowing your own skills inside out. It's not just about listing your previous jobs or tasks. You need to break your experience down into tangible skills that are relevant to the job you’re applying for.

At Inspired Recruitment, we focus heavily on matching skills to the roles we’re placing candidates in. And that’s exactly what you need to do when preparing for an interview: identify the skills you’ve gained from your previous roles – whether it’s leadership, communication, problem-solving, or technical abilities – and be ready to talk about them in detail.

Think about examples of when you used these skills to make an impact. Being clear about what you bring to the table will give you the confidence to speak with authority and provide specific evidence that aligns with what the employer is looking for.

2. Master the STAR Method for Behavioural Questions

If you've ever been to an interview, you’ll know that employers love asking behavioural questions. These questions often begin with phrases like, “Tell me about a time when…” or “Give me an example of how you handled…”

Behavioural questions can be tough if you're not prepared. But they’re easier to handle when you use the STAR method. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result, and it’s a simple yet powerful way to structure your answers.

  • Situation: Briefly describe the context or challenge you faced.

  • Task: Explain what your role was in the situation.

  • Action: Outline the steps you took to address the challenge.

  • Result: Share the outcome and what you learned.

By using STAR, you’ll be able to respond confidently, providing interviewers with clear, concise, and structured answers that highlight your experience and demonstrate your value.

3. Research the Company and Understand the Role

This might sound like a no-brainer, but I can’t stress enough how important it is to do your homework. At Inspired Recruitment, we make it a priority to research both candidates and clients to ensure the perfect fit. You need to apply the same approach to your interview prep.

You don’t just want to know what the company does; you want to understand their values, culture, and what their future goals are. This knowledge allows you to tailor your responses to show how you fit into their vision. If you can speak about the company’s mission and show how your skills can contribute to their success, you’ll stand out as a candidate who’s genuinely interested in the opportunity.

4. Prepare Questions for the Interviewer

An interview is a two-way street. While you’re being assessed, this is also your chance to evaluate whether the role and the company are right for you. So, prepare thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer.

When you ask insightful questions, you show that you’re engaged and invested in the role. For example, instead of asking “What does your company do?” you could ask, “How does the company’s leadership style align with the goals of the team?” or “What are the key challenges the team is currently facing?”

This kind of questioning shows you’re thinking critically about the position and that you’re already visualising how you might contribute.

5. Be Confident, But Stay Humble

Confidence is key in any interview, but it’s important not to come across as arrogant. I always remind my candidates at Inspired Recruitment that employers want to know what value you can bring, not hear a laundry list of how amazing you are. It’s a delicate balance: you need to show that you believe in yourself, but also demonstrate humility and a willingness to learn.

Don’t be afraid to acknowledge areas where you might not have all the answers but show that you’re ready to take on the challenge and grow. Employers want to know that you're adaptable and willing to develop, so give them evidence of your past growth and openness to feedback.

6. Follow Up After the Interview

This is one of the easiest ways to leave a lasting impression. A brief, polite follow-up email to thank the interviewer for their time not only shows good manners but reinforces your enthusiasm for the role. It’s a chance to reiterate why you're excited about the opportunity and to remind them of your strengths.

A well-written follow-up email can also give you an edge over other candidates, especially if you personalise it to include a specific detail from the interview. This shows that you were engaged and paying attention.

At Inspired Recruitment, we believe in the power of preparation and a positive mindset. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting your career journey, following these tips will give you the confidence and clarity you need to excel in your next interview. Remember, an interview isn’t just about showing what you know; it’s about demonstrating how you’ll add value and fit into the company’s vision.

Good luck, and remember: success is about being ready, being confident, and most importantly, being yourself.
