If you're reading this, it means you've got an exciting opportunity ahead: a job interview. Whether it’s your first interview or your fiftieth, preparation is the key to success. At Inspired Recruitment, we’ve helped thousands of candidates land their dream roles, and today, I want to share practical, straightforward advice to help you stand out.
An interview isn’t just about impressing the employer; it’s also your chance to find out if the company aligns with your goals, values, and vision. Let’s explore how you can walk into that room (or Zoom call) with confidence, clarity, and a strong chance of success.
Do Your Homework One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is walking into an interview unprepared. At Inspired Recruitment, we always advise our candidates to research the company thoroughly. This isn’t just about knowing the basics—really dig into their mission, values, recent news, and the role itself.
Ask yourself:
What does this company stand for?
How does the role fit into their overall goals?
What challenges might they be facing in this sector?
When you come armed with this knowledge, it shows that you’re genuinely interested and serious about contributing to their success. It also helps you tailor your answers, making them more relevant and impactful.
Practice Makes Perfect Rehearsing your answers isn’t about memorising scripts; it’s about being comfortable articulating your thoughts. Practice common interview questions such as:
"Can you tell me about yourself?"
"Why do you want this role?"
"What are your strengths and weaknesses?"
At Inspired, we coach our candidates to use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to answer behavioural questions. For example, if asked, “Can you give an example of solving a problem at work?”:
Situation: Briefly describe the context.
Task: Explain what you needed to achieve.
Action: Detail the steps you took.
Result: Highlight the positive outcome.
This approach keeps your answers concise and impactful while showcasing your skills and achievements.
Dress for the Part First impressions count. Dressing appropriately demonstrates respect for the opportunity and the company. At Inspired, we often advise candidates to dress slightly smarter than the company's typical dress code. This ensures you come across as professional without feeling overdressed.
If you’re unsure, ask your recruitment consultant or research the company culture. In today’s world of hybrid work, this also applies to video interviews—don’t underestimate the impact of a polished, professional look on camera.
Build Rapport Building a connection with your interviewer is just as important as answering questions well. Smile, make eye contact, and greet them warmly. At Inspired, we encourage candidates to see the interview as a conversation, not an interrogation.
Show genuine interest in the person interviewing you. If they mention something about the company or their role, acknowledge it and, if appropriate, ask a thoughtful follow-up question. This demonstrates your active engagement and curiosity.
Prepare Your Questions An interview isn’t a one-way street. Employers value candidates who ask insightful questions—it shows you’re thinking critically about the role and whether it’s the right fit for you.
Here are some examples:
“What does success look like in this role?”
“Can you tell me more about the team I’d be working with?”
“What are the biggest challenges the company is currently facing?”
Asking questions also leaves a strong final impression, showing that you’re proactive and engaged.
Handle Nerves Like a Pro It’s natural to feel nervous before an interview—even seasoned professionals do. The key is to channel those nerves into positive energy. At Inspired, we encourage candidates to focus on their breathing and visualise a successful outcome.
Here are a few techniques:
Take a few deep breaths before the interview to centre yourself.
Remind yourself why you’re a great fit for the role.
Remember: the interviewer wants you to succeed. They’re hoping you’re the right candidate, so you’re not walking into a hostile environment.
Follow Up After the interview, don’t underestimate the power of a thank-you email. Keep it short and professional:
Thank them for their time.
Highlight something specific from the conversation that resonated with you.
Reaffirm your interest in the role.
This small gesture can set you apart and leave a lasting impression.
