Ignore the Labels and Choose Your Circle Wisely

In life and in work, people will label you. They’ll try to box you in, define you by their own limited perspective, or even diminish you. These labels can be direct—comments about your abilities, appearance, or worth—or they can be subtle whispers behind your back. If you let them, these labels can burrow deep into your confidence, influencing how you see yourself and the opportunities you’re willing to take. But here’s the truth: no one’s label defines your value.

Let me tell you a story that resonates with this. It involves a young boy, a prank, and a life lesson that holds as true in the world of recruitment and career development as it does in a classroom.

During a school prank, a student stuck a piece of paper on another boy’s back that read, “I’m Stupid.” The class laughed quietly at the joke, but the boy, unaware of the label, carried on as usual. Later, during a challenging maths lesson, the teacher posed a difficult question. The class sat in silence, unable to solve it. That is, except for the boy with the label on his back. He confidently walked to the board, worked through the problem, and provided the correct answer.

The teacher, noticing the laughter, removed the paper and revealed the prank. She then delivered two powerful lessons to the class:

  1. Ignore the labels people give you. If that boy had known about the paper, his confidence might have been crushed. He could have stayed in his seat, believing the laughter and the label. But he didn’t. Instead, he seized the moment, proved his ability, and silenced the critics.

  2. Loyalty matters more than numbers in your friendships. Not a single classmate had the courage to tell the boy about the paper. Loyalty isn’t about how many people surround you; it’s about the few who will stand by you, protect you, and push you forward.

Recruitment and Labels

This story mirrors the challenges many of us face in the professional world. When you’re job hunting, working towards a promotion, or trying to build your career, you’ll encounter labels. Maybe a previous employer undervalued you, and now you’re carrying the invisible label of “not good enough.” Perhaps you’ve faced rejection and begun to believe you’re unqualified. Or maybe you’ve had colleagues who didn’t support you, making you doubt your ability to lead or succeed.

At Inspired Recruitment, we see this often. Candidates come to us feeling beaten down by the labels others have placed on them. Yet, time and again, we help people step into roles where they thrive, proving those labels completely wrong.

For example, one of our candidates—a highly skilled optical assistant—had been told by her previous employer that she wasn’t ready for a management role. She’d been given the label “not a leader.” When she came to us, she hesitated to apply for senior roles, afraid that label might follow her. But after working with her, we helped her recognise her skills, rebuild her confidence, and land a position as a practice manager. A year later, she’s thriving, her team loves her, and she’s smashing targets. The label? Forgotten.

The key here is mindset. Like the boy in the story, she ignored the labels and seized the opportunity to prove herself.

The Role of True Friends and Colleagues

Now let’s talk about loyalty. Just as important as ignoring labels is surrounding yourself with people who uplift you. In the recruitment world, this translates to having colleagues, mentors, and leaders who genuinely care about your growth.

I often tell my team at Inspired Recruitment: “Your circle matters.” Whether it’s friends, co-workers, or mentors, you need people who will be honest with you, push you to achieve more, and defend you when others try to knock you down. A workplace with supportive colleagues can transform your career.

On the flip side, if you’re surrounded by negativity—whether it’s unsupportive friends or a toxic workplace—it’s time to reassess. Just like the boy in the classroom, you don’t need a crowd of fake friends who laugh behind your back. You’re better off finding the few who will have your back.

How to Apply This Lesson

Here’s how you can take these lessons and apply them to your own career and personal growth:

  1. Ignore the labels. Whether they’re from a past boss, a colleague, or even yourself, let them go. You are more than someone else’s opinion. Take stock of your achievements,

focus on your strengths, and don’t let negativity stop you from reaching your goals.

  2. Surround yourself with loyalty. Seek out mentors, colleagues, and friends who see your potential and aren’t afraid to tell you when you’re wrong but will also cheer you on when you’re right. Choose quality over quantity every time.

  3. Be that loyal friend or colleague. Support those around you, whether it’s a teammate struggling with self-doubt or a friend feeling stuck in their career. Offer encouragement, constructive feedback, and positivity.

  4. Take the leap. Just like the boy solved the maths problem, take opportunities even when you’re doubting yourself. Apply for that job, pitch that idea, or ask for that promotion.

At the end of the day, your success will come from your ability to see past the labels and surround yourself with the right people. Ignore the doubters, focus on what you can do, and align yourself with those who believe in you.

Because here’s the truth:  The only label that matters is the one you give yourself. So, choose wisely. Choose confidence. Choose growth.
