Interviews Can Be Nerve-Wracking – Here’s How Inspired Recruitment Can Help
At Inspired Recruitment, we understand how daunting interviews can be. Whether in-person or online, the process can feel overwhelming. You want to make the best impression and secure the role, but the pressure can be intense. Here's the good news: interviews don’t have to be intimidating if you’re well-prepared.
Drawing on my experience and the expertise of the Inspired team, we’ve developed a thoughtful guide to help you feel confident and ready for any interview. Below, I’ll share practical advice to support you before, during, and after your interview.
Before the Interview: Set Yourself Up for Success
1. Do Your Research
At Inspired, we believe preparation is everything. Employers want to see that you’re genuinely interested in their organisation. By researching the company, you show initiative, commitment, and professionalism.
Here’s where to focus:
What does the company do?
What are their recent successes?
What challenges are they facing?
Who are their key customers and competitors?
What’s their unique selling point (USP)?
This knowledge can help you tailor your answers and even inspire great questions to ask at the end of the interview.
2. Prepare Your Answers
Think about the questions you’re likely to be asked. Start with the basics, such as:
“Tell me about yourself.”
“What’s your greatest career achievement?”
“What are your strengths and weaknesses?”
Using the job description, turn the key responsibilities into potential questions. For each, prepare examples that highlight your skills and accomplishments. Use the Inspired three-step method:
Concept – How did you approach the challenge?
Construct – What did you do to address it?
Outcome – What were the results, and how did it benefit your employer?
3. Consider the Practicalities
An interview isn’t just about what you say—it’s about how you present yourself.
For in-person interviews:
Plan your journey. Aim to arrive 10–15 minutes early.
Make sure your outfit is professional and appropriate.
Eat something beforehand to keep your energy up.
For virtual interviews:
Test your technology to ensure it works.
Dress professionally, even if the interview is online.
Choose a quiet, tidy space with good lighting.
At Inspired, we guide our candidates through these details because we know how much they matter.
During the Interview: Build Confidence and Make an Impression
4. Start Strong
First impressions are critical. When you meet your interviewer, smile, maintain eye contact, and introduce yourself warmly. If you’re meeting in person, a firm handshake can go a long way.
5. Be Honest and Authentic
If you’re unsure of an answer, it’s okay to take a moment to think or ask for clarification. Honesty is always better than bluffing. If there’s a gap in your experience, highlight your transferable skills and your willingness to learn.
6. Avoid Sensitive Topics Too Soon
Hold off on asking about salary or holidays during your first interview. At Inspired, we coach candidates to focus on showcasing their value first—there will be time to discuss the details later in the process.
After the Interview: Follow Up with Purpose
7. Be Patient
It can be hard to wait for feedback, but remember, hiring managers often interview multiple candidates over several weeks. Typically, you’ll hear back within 48 to 72 hours. If not, a polite follow-up after a few days shows initiative without coming across as pushy.
8. Stay Visible
If you don’t hear back after two weeks, reach out again. We’ve seen situations where a second-choice candidate lands the job after the first offer falls through. Staying visible keeps you in the running.
