Make every moment count

Life is a fragile gift, yet many of us move through it as though we have all the time in the world. But the truth is, as Marianne Baum so beautifully wrote, "Every minute someone leaves this world behind." The line we are all in—whether young or old—moves forward without our knowledge or consent. We can’t step out of it, and we can’t delay it. What we can do, though, is make the time we have truly count.
For me, this isn’t just about the big milestones or grand gestures. It’s about finding meaning in the everyday, from the way we treat our loved ones to how we approach our work. Because let’s be honest: life is too short to waste on unhappiness, whether that’s in your personal relationships or the job you spend so many hours doing.
Happiness Matters Everywhere
We’ve all heard the saying, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” While this might sound idealistic, there’s truth in its core. Work is not just about earning a paycheque. It’s where we spend a huge portion of our lives, and if it leaves you drained, stressed, or unfulfilled, it impacts everything.
If you’re in a job that doesn’t excite you, challenge you, or align with your values, ask yourself: Why am I staying? Life is too valuable to be spent wishing away the hours until Friday. At Inspired Recruitment, one of our core missions is to help people find work that makes them feel empowered, appreciated, and motivated. Because when you’re happy at work, it ripples out into every other part of your life.
Make the Time
It’s not just about work, though. Happiness is holistic. It’s about your relationships, your passions, and how you spend your moments outside of the 9-to-5. Are you prioritising the things that really matter? Are you spending time with the people you love, pursuing hobbies that fulfil you, or simply taking time to rest?
We all fall into the trap of “I’ll do it later” or “I’ll make time when things calm down.” But here’s the thing: life doesn’t wait. You don’t know how much time you have, so stop waiting for the “right moment” to live it.
Make a Difference
As Baum writes, we should all aim to:
Make someone smile. A kind word or a small gesture can turn someone’s day around.
Make peace. Let go of grudges, mend relationships, and move forward with love.
Make someone feel like a somebody. Recognise the value in everyone, from the colleague struggling quietly to the stranger who crosses your path.
Make sure your gifts are known. You have talents, ideas, and dreams that deserve to be shared. Don’t let fear or doubt hold you back.
In both your personal and professional life, you have the power to create moments of joy, connection, and impact. Whether that’s mentoring a colleague, being there for a friend, or simply being present for your family, it all matters.
No Regrets
The greatest tragedy in life isn’t the time we lose but the moments we don’t take. We all have regrets but imagine living in a way where you minimise them. Where you tell the people you love how much they mean to you. Where you pursue opportunities that scare you but excite you. Where you live boldly and authentically, without waiting for “one day.”
Be Ready
None of us know how many moments we have left, but we can make sure the ones we have are meaningful. Be present. Be kind. Be brave. And above all, be happy—with yourself, your choices, and the life you create.
Because when your time in the line comes, you’ll want to look back and know you truly lived. And that includes being happy at home, at work, and everywhere in between.
If you’re not where you want to be—whether in your career or your personal life—take this as your sign to make the change. You owe it to yourself, and to those you love, to live a life with no regrets.
Make the time. Make it count.
