Mark Goode on Changing Jobs: It's About Removing Barriers, Not Forcing Moves

As a CEO who has spent years in the recruitment industry, I’ve seen first-hand how emotionally charged the decision to change jobs can be. Let me share my perspective on why Inspired Recruitment doesn’t believe in pushing people to move; instead, we focus on removing the barriers that stop them from embracing change.

When someone considers leaving their current role, it’s rarely a simple decision. Even when a new opportunity seems perfect—better pay, a stronger culture, more growth—it’s natural for people to feel a deep sense of fear and hesitation. Why? Because change threatens our sense of stability, and that’s a hard thing to let go of.

The Fear of Losing Control

One of the biggest challenges we face is overcoming reactance. People resist change when they feel like their freedom to choose is being taken away. If I were to tell someone, "You have to take this job; it’s the best decision for you," they’d likely shut down immediately. Why? Because it feels like I’m forcing them into a corner. At Inspired Recruitment, we do the opposite. We frame opportunities as invitations, not mandates.

It’s not about saying, "You must do this." It’s about saying, "What if this could be your next step? What if this role solves the frustrations you’ve been dealing with for years?" This shift in approach makes all the difference.

The Comfort of What You Know

Then there’s the endowment effect. People value what they already have more than what they don’t. Even if someone’s current job is unfulfilling, there’s comfort in familiarity. They know their boss, their team, the commute—even the quirks of the coffee machine. That sense of ownership creates a psychological hurdle.

Our job isn’t to convince people to abandon their current role; it’s to ease their concerns by helping them see the benefits of what’s ahead. We don’t talk about what they’ll lose; we highlight what they’ll gain—fulfilment, growth, a team that values them. We help them visualise a future where the grass really is greener, not because it’s new but because it’s the right fit.

Making Change Feel Achievable

Change feels daunting when the gap between "where I am" and "where I want to be" seems too big. This is why we focus on shrinking the distance. Instead of presenting a new role as a dramatic leap, we break it down into small, achievable steps. "Let’s talk about what you’re looking for in your next role. Let’s explore how this opportunity aligns with your values and goals."

By making the process feel less overwhelming, we help candidates see that moving forward isn’t an impossible task—it’s a natural progression.

Overcoming Uncertainty

Of course, uncertainty is one of the biggest barriers to change. People ask themselves, What if it doesn’t work out? What if I regret leaving? Those fears are valid, and at Inspired Recruitment, we never dismiss them. Instead, we address them head-on.

We share success stories, offer clear information about the company and role, and connect candidates with others who’ve made similar moves. Knowing that others have walked the same path—and thrived—can turn uncertainty into confidence.

Building Trust

Trust is the cornerstone of everything we do. Candidates aren’t just trusting us with their CVs; they’re trusting us with their careers, their livelihoods, their futures. That’s why we work to build trust through every interaction. We don’t sell roles; we listen, we understand, and we support.

Our role is that of a catalyst, not a persuader. We don’t force change; we create an environment where change can happen naturally. We tackle the fears, the doubts, and the unknowns, allowing people to make decisions with clarity and confidence.

The Inspired Approach

At Inspired Recruitment, we use a framework that aligns with what I call “The REDUCE Philosophy”:

  • Reduce Reactance: Invite, don’t push.

  • Ease Endowment: Highlight what’s to be gained, not what’s to be lost.

  • Shrink Distance: Make the change feel achievable.

  • Alleviate Uncertainty: Build confidence through transparency and evidence.

  • Corroborating Evidence: Share stories of success and proof that the change is worth it.

Changing jobs is never just about the role; it’s about the person. It’s about their fears, their dreams, their sense of identity. By focusing on these human elements, we can help people embrace the opportunities that are truly right for them.

To anyone reading this who’s standing at the edge of a career change, my advice is simple: don’t let fear hold you back. It’s okay to feel unsure, but don’t let that stop you from exploring what’s possible. At Inspired Recruitment, we’re here to walk that journey with you, not to push you down the path but to show you that the path exists.

Change isn’t easy, but with the right support, it can be the best decision you’ll ever make.
