Why Worrying Won’t Help: A Guide for Inspired Candidates

At Inspired Recruitment, we understand that job hunting can sometimes feel overwhelming. It’s natural to worry about your future—whether you’ll find the right role, impress in an interview, or make a good impression in a new workplace. But what if I told you that most of the things you worry about either won’t happen or are completely out of your control?

Drawing lessons from Brigid Delaney’s book Reasons Not to Worry, here’s a guide to help you shift your mindset and approach your job search with positivity and resilience.

1. Worry Doesn’t Change Outcomes

Worry is normal—it’s part of being human. But think about this: has worrying ever solved a problem for you? Probably not. Instead, it drains your energy. As a candidate, your energy is better spent preparing for interviews, brushing up your CV, or practising how to explain your skills. Recognise that worrying about whether you’ll get a role won’t change the outcome—but preparation might.

2. Control What You Can, Let Go of the Rest

Recruitment can feel like a waiting game. Will the employer get back to me? What if someone else gets the job? These things are out of your control. What is in your control is how you present yourself, your mindset, and your willingness to learn. Focus on those. For instance, if you’ve been rejected for a role, consider what you could improve for next time and move forward with confidence.

3. Stay Present and Mindful

Job searches can make your mind race ahead: "What if I don’t get this job? What will I do next?" Instead, try to stay present. When you’re in an interview, don’t worry about whether you’ll get the job—just focus on giving the best answers you can. One of our candidates recently shared how practising mindfulness before their interview helped them stay calm and confident. Try it for yourself: take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that you’ve got this.

4. Challenge Your Negative Thoughts

We’ve all been there: the inner critic that says, "You’ll never get that job" or "You’re not good enough." Stop. Ask yourself, Is this true? In most cases, it’s not. At Inspired, we believe in reframing these thoughts. Instead of "I’ll never get this job," try saying, "I have the skills for this job, and I’ll give it my best shot." That small shift can make a big difference.

5. Accept Uncertainty

The recruitment process has its uncertainties—will the employer call back? How long will it take? Embrace it. Life’s uncertainty isn’t something to fear; it’s where opportunities are born. Think of it like this: uncertainty could mean your dream job is just around the corner, even if you don’t see it yet.

6. Focus on Gratitude

When you’re feeling down about your job search, try this: write down three things you’re grateful for. Maybe it’s your support system, your health, or the fact that you have the opportunity to grow your career. Gratitude can shift your perspective and remind you of the positives in your life.

7. Lean on Your Support Network

You’re not alone in this journey. Talk to us at Inspired, or share your worries with a trusted friend or family member. Sometimes, just voicing your concerns can help you gain clarity. We’re here to guide you, cheer you on, and remind you that you’re capable of amazing things.

8. Avoid Overloading Yourself

In today’s world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by job alerts, social media comparisons, and endless online advice. Set boundaries. For example, dedicate a specific time each day to your job search rather than letting it consume you. And remember, Inspired is here to filter the noise and help you focus on roles that truly match your skills and ambitions.

9. Take Proactive Steps

Worry thrives on inaction. Instead of spiralling into "What ifs," take one small step today—whether it’s updating your LinkedIn profile, researching a company, or reaching out to your Inspired consultant for advice. Progress, no matter how small, builds confidence.

10. Be Kind to Yourself

Remember, you’re doing your best. Job searching is a challenge, but don’t let it define your worth. Treat yourself with compassion, and celebrate small wins—whether that’s landing an interview, getting positive feedback, or simply learning something new about yourself along the way.

Final Thoughts

At Inspired Recruitment, we don’t just match people to jobs—we help you grow as a professional and as a person. Worry may show up on this journey, but you don’t have to let it take the wheel. By focusing on what you can control, challenging negativity, and staying open to possibilities, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.

So, take a breath. Trust the process. And remember—we’re in your corner every step of the way.
